THE SACRED ART
OF LIVING & DYING
Unit One: Understanding Spiritual Pain
CEU’S (14 credits)
with Richard Groves & Sr. Mary Assumpta, CSSP
Tuesday & Wednesday, February 2 & 3
9 am - 6 pm each day
Franciscan Renewal Center
“Understanding Spiritual Pain” is the first of 4
units in The Sacred Art of Living and Dying series
that will be hosted at the Franciscan Renewal
Center. Each unit stands alone and is appropriate for
both professional caregivers and the general public.
• Learn from the remarkable history and cultural
diversity of spiritual caregiving practices and
rituals from around the world-particularly the
Western Monastic “Ars Moriendi” tradition.
• Discover life skills based on clinically-sound
practices that address spiritual and emotional
distress throughout times of transition.
• Explore the critical distinctions between pain and
suffering, curing and healing, spirituality and
religious practice.
• Compare medical and spiritual care models for
diagnosing and responding to human suffering
including the holistic research of Dr. Cicely
Sanders, founder of the modern hospice
movement.
The goal of the workshop is to explore the nature
and inter-relationship among all the dimensions of
human health and suffering–physical, emotional and
psycho-spiritual.
I enthusiastically endorse the Sacred Art of Living
& Dying series because spirituality is the most
overlooked factor in relieving pain.
Dame Cicely Saunders, Md., Founder, St. Christopher’s Hospice,
London
Sacred Art of Living & Dying is necessary in our
times because it takes much more than medicine to
ease human suffering.
